Diagnostic Services

When you experience symptoms of an irregular heartbeat, you want a prompt diagnosis so you can protect your health. At the Bob and Patty Edwards Arrhythmia Center at Overlake, you’ll find the advanced technology and professional expertise to identify and treat your heart rhythm disorder.

What To Expect At Your Appointment

To diagnose your arrhythmia, your physician will review your medical and family histories, ask you to describe your arrhythmia symptoms and physically examine you. Bring a list of all your medications, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements.

You may be asked to take some diagnostic tests to help us collect more information about how your heart works.

Heart Rhythm Diagnostic Tests & Procedures

Take advantage of a wide range of diagnostic tools at Overlake Medical Center, including:

  • Blood tests – Check levels of potassium and thyroid hormones
  • Echocardiogram – Uses sound waves (ultrasound) to produce an image of your heart’s chambers and valves and show how well your heart works
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) – Detects your heart’s electrical activity
  • Electrophysiology study (EPS) – Helps pinpoint the source of your arrhythmia and determine what can be done to control it
  • Event monitoring – Records your heartbeat when you press a button; may be worn for up to a month
  • Genetic testing for inherited arrhythmias
  • Holter monitoring – Records your heartbeat continuously for 24 to 48 hours
  • Stress echocardiogram – Shows how well your heart works before and after you exercise
  • Tilt table testing – Checks how changes in body position affect your blood pressure
  • ZIO® Patch – Records your heartbeat continuously for up to two weeks; unlike Holter and event monitors, the ZIO Patch is waterproof and wireless
