Palliative Care Consult Service

Palliative Care is a medical specialty that helps seriously ill patients and their families

Facing a serious illness can be an emotional, lonely, and challenging experience. The Palliative Care team at Overlake Medical Center provides specialized care to support you and your family through difficult times by focusing on the relief of the pain, symptoms, and stress of your serious illness--whatever the diagnosis. Our goal is to help you to live comfortably and to provide the best quality of life for you and your family. Palliative Care can be provided at the same time as curative treatments.

How Palliative Care can help

When you are dealing with a serious illness, you might need relief of symptoms, support with making choices about your medical care, and expert guidance to assist you and your family. Our Palliative Care team can:

  • Expertly treat your pain and other symptoms.

  • Coordinate care and treatment with your doctors, at any stage of your illness.
  • Identify support services to help you after you leave the hospital.

What you can expect from Palliative Care

  • Relief from distressing symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, nausea, constipation, fatigue, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping.
  • Help to maintain the most comfortable, independent and active life possible
  • Better understanding of your condition and the impact that different medical treatment options may have on your condition and your goals.

A dedicated and experienced team

The Palliative Care Consult Service at Overlake uses a team approach and is offered along with other appropriate forms of medical treatment. Our team includes specially trained and board certified physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, pharmacists, therapists and others who will work in partnership with your attending and primary physician to provide an extra layer of support for you and your family.

How to request an inpatient Palliative Care consultation

Tell your doctor that you would like a Palliative Care Team consultation. After your doctor’s referral, a meeting will then be arranged with you, your family, and the palliative care team. The consultations will take place during your hospital stay.
