Class 3:  labor Coping Skills

This 2-hour Labor Coping Skills course is the 3rd class in a series of 4 classes, designed to prepare you for birth and caring for a newborn.  This class will teach you how to cope in labor both while laboring at home and in the hospital.  The course is also a good choice for families who have already given birth and simply want to refresh or enhance their delivery coping skills.

We recommend you complete a childbirth preparation class prior to enrolling in this class.

To best prepare you from labor to parenting a newborn, we also recommend the following classes:

Class 1:  Childbirth Preparation

Class 2:  Newborn Care

Class 4:  Breastfeeding

Recommended to be taken during the 3rd trimester, this 2 hour class is taught by a certified educator.

Topics include:

  • Coping in Labor:   When and where will you need it?
  • A brief refresher on the stages and experiences of labor.  (For an in-depth understanding of the stages of labor, going to the hospital and medical procedures, you should also take our childbirth preparation course).
  • Pain in Labor:  What affects labor pain and how do you feel about it?
  • What can you do now and during labor to strengthen your ability to cope with the discomfort?
  • Building confidence in your ability to cope with the pain to decrease fear and anxiety.
  • Support:  How can your support team help you?
  • Hands-on techniques for support partners to help comfort the person in labor. Communicating preferences, feelings and desires with your support team.
  • Helping labor progress:  How can you work with your labor to help things move smoothly?
  • How your activity in labor can affect the progression of your baby’s birth.
  • Positions and techniques to encourage rotation and descent.

Things to bring to the class:

  • Dress in comfortable clothing for breathing & relaxation exercises
  • Two pillows
  • Blanket or mat
  • Bottled water

Registration, class location and cancelations:

  • Classes, schedules and fees are subject to change
  • There are no refunds for missed classes
  • No children permitted in class. No childcare available
  • Class cancellations received by the registrar seven days prior to the class are entitled to a refund

Congratulations on registering for class! There are two more important steps to complete before your delivery at Overlake.

1. Choose a Doctor for Your Baby: Before you go to the hospital, be sure to select a pediatrician or family practice doctor for your new baby. To find a pediatric or family practice physician, visit overlakehospital.org/findaphysician or call 425-688-5211. Be sure to bring the doctor's information with you to the hospital when you deliver.

2. Pre-register for admission: To simplify your arrival on the day of your delivery and to allow us to prepare for your stay at Overlake, please be sure to pre-register online at overlakehospital.org/prereg
